It\u2019s a spectacle that\u2019s hard to ignore, especially when it’s one of the country\u2019s most beloved cultural traditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, what is a lion dance?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lions were first introduced to China during the Han Dynasty (221\u2013207 CE). It\u2019s reported<\/a> that the animal was brought as a tributary gift from the Central Plains via the Silk Roads.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thing is, hundreds of years earlier, lions were viewed as ferocious, but it was during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25\u2013220 CE) that the image of the animal began to change. They started to appear in Buddhist paintings and texts \u2014 and soon became an icon of celestial power.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the early Tang Dynasty (618\u2013907 CE), lions had become a powerful symbol of strength, wisdom, and protection. As a result, lion costumes began appearing in imperial court ceremonies and royal entertainment, marking the early development of what we now know as the Lion Dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there are many folklores as to how the Lion Dance started:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guan Yin\u2019s compassion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This folklore tells the tale of a lion, once a mischievous heavenly creature, who was punished and sent to Earth. Moved by compassion, the Goddess Guan Yin transformed the lion into a guardian that would use its strength to protect people and bring good fortune, giving the lion dance its symbolic role today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
